On this day
In 1873, 562 people died when the White Star Line ocean liner Atlantic sank after hitting rocks off Nova Scotia, Canada, on its crossing between Liverpool and New York City; in 1875 The Times published the first newspaper weather map, recording the weather from the previous day. The map had been prepared by Francis Galton, a researcher in a wide range of disciplines who was knighted in 1909. He was a cousin of Charles Darwin, the naturalist; in 1918 the Royal Air Force was formed, from the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service; in 1979 Ayatollah Khomeini declared Iran an Islamic republic, after a two-day referendum; in 1999 the national minimum wage was introduced after the passing of the National Minimum Wage Act in July 1998, setting a minimum hourly rate for adult workers in most sectors of the British economy. The starting rate was £3.60 per hour for workers aged 22.
Nature notes
What is spring’s most beautiful sound? The irrepressible gurgling of a curlew as it hovers over the pasture would surely gain many votes: a song both sad and yet profoundly affirmative. The telegraph wire twittering of a swallow might be many people’s favourite. And it is not just the birds that create the cherished soundscape of spring. The ponderous but purposeful humming of queen bumblebees searching the ground for nesting holes is a beautiful seasonal solo. Then there is the whole orchestra of early pollinators that gather to feed on pussy willow catkins. More subtle sounds include the delicate percussion of breeding newts beating the warming water with their tails.
