Update 4/5/2019: I am lowering my previous 4 star review to 3 stars. As I continue to read through this Bible I am finding dozens of pages with the formatting issue (like the one in my picture). I find these pages almost unreadable and it's really souring this version of the Bible for me. There has to be a better NIV Kindle Bible out there. If anyone knows of one I am open to recommendations.
When I received a Kindle as a gift, I wanted to add a Bible to it. I prefer the NIV (New International Version) and Zondervan has always been my favorite Bible brand. I bought the book for my Kindle, but you can also read it for free using Prime Reading. I have always trusted Zondervan for high quality Bibles that are accurate and easy to read.
This Bible is a pleasure to read. The table of contents is laid out beautifully making it easy to jump to a specific section of the Bible without having to swipe your finger through an entire chapter. The text is very easy to read and remains crisp when you adjust the text size on the Kindle. I prefer a larger font, similar to the font of my large print Bible.
In addition to being well laid out, this Bible includes an awesome footnote system which enables you to learn more about what you are learning. The footnotes allow you to get more information and then go right back to reading the same section without having to jump from one page to the next. I love the additional information in the footnotes!
One of the biggest benefits of reading the Bible on my Kindle has proven to be the ability to click on a word for the definition. It is helpful to find out more information about people, places, measurements, and words that I am unfamiliar with or don't immediately recognize while reading my Bible.
So far this sounds like the perfect five star Kindle NIV Bible, right? Well for the most part it is. But there are a couple of problems and limitations when using this Bible:
Automatic Updates-like most Kindle books, this Bible automatically updates when there is a new version available. Every time my Bible updates to the current version the table of contents stops working. I then have to manually remove and re-add the Bible to my Kindle. I hope Zondervan fixes this in a future update.
Weird formatting-as I am reading the Bible from beginning to end, I am finding formatting issues in the Kindle book. The main issue is that sentences are split up letter by letter and appear on the right hand side one letter on each line. This makes it very difficult to read the sentences, unless you like word games and can figure them out easily.
At first I thought the weird formatting was due to the fact that I have my Kindle text setting on a large print. I tried making the text smaller and the formatting issue remained. I will be reading through a chapter which is formatted normally and then all of a sudden a few sentences have poor formatting. I would like to see this fixed in an update.
One of the biggest benefits of owning this Bible for my Kindle has been how easy it is to access the Bible whenever I have a few moments. I find myself reading my Bible more frequently, as I am able to access the exact page I left off on without messing with bookmarks or dog eared pages. If minor issues are fixed this would be a five star Bible.
